Census for 1800

Page 20 of the census is below. It is interesting to see what names were popular in these early years of our town. Lots of Ebenezars, Ezekiels, Elijahs, etc. It seems clear that there were many Christians here who read their Bibles. Often the Bible was the only book a family owned, and it was used on a daily basis in the household. It helped instruct the children in reading, and imparted moral lessons at the same time.

Hi Sandie,
I am a descendant of the Joseph Hatch shown on this page. He is also listed in the 1810 census, then he moved to Delaware county, Ohio. Have you seen any mention of him in the early records?

Hi, Lisa, great to find a relative of an early Scipioite! No, I haven't seen anything in our early records about Joseph Hatch, but then I haven't specifically looked.
I can tell you that I do not have a family history on him in our "Families" file. If I find anything, I'll let you know - thanks for participating!

I'm working on township history in Delaware County, Ohio and think I'm working on this Joseph Hatch. If I'm correct, this Joseph was a Revolutionary War veteran and had sons Nathaniel b. 1792, Waterman, Alfred, and Jonathan. I'm looking for information on his Revolutionary War service and would also be interested in any lists of daughters. You can e-mail me directly at mvtieche@att.net Thanks you!

Hi Sandie,
I believe the "Mark Hoddard" is actually "Mark Stoddard" - I've been trying to find the father of my ancestor, Darius Stoddard, and think Mark may be a possibility. Although "Mark" seems like such an odd name for that time! Darius was born abt. 1801 in what would have been Scipio at that time - I've noticed that region's boundaries and county names changed a lot during those early years. Please let me know if you have any other information about Mark Stoddard. (grettaberg[at]yahoo.com)

Thank you, Gretta. I thought "Hoddard" was an unusual name.
I find Mark Stoddard as a property owner in Scipio in the tax assessment records for 1800, 1801 and 1802.I have paper copies of those from the NYS Archives, but I understand they are available on ancestry.com if you have access to that.
I have found no other records of this family in Scipio; I will contact you if I do.
